M720 Option VIN’S

Porsche built 86 M720 option cars none of which were U.S. models. The cars include 19 RHD. Five of the RHD cars were the final order VIN’s. The final production and delivery dates do not include the final five cars as complete records are not available for those VIN’s. The factory prototype is not included in the 86 count.

Facts, Rumors and Myths?

# 1 Of the the six cars added to the original factory memo ordering 80 vehicles one was added to the production run ending November 20, 1992, the other five were added after this date. Originally slated to be a 1992 model year car with production ending by July 1992, production did not start until July 1992 and ended in November 1992 making it a ‘P’ or 1993 model year car, a model year shared with the 3.6 Turbo model for the ROW.

# 2 The three ‘Special’ delivery cars may have been option code 740 ‘exhibition vehicle’ but they do not show this option code in their build sheets.

# 3 38 cars were built with no driver or passenger airbags, no power steering and no air conditioner.

# 4 The Japan cars were all Polar Silver and LHD.

# 5 The “Special’ factory prototype car featuring the ‘Supercar Champion’ rocker script was built using a standard 1992 Turbo chassis VIN 470612.

# 6 VIN 479003, 479011, 479085 and VIN 479086 were all purchased by the same owner Hong Kong magnate Michael Mak. Delivered by the factory with full Red leather interiors, leather wrapped Matter roll bars, Gold painted calipers and Amethyst Metallic wheel centers. They were ‘officially’ delivered nearly two years after their finished production dates.

# 7 VIN 479021 and VIN 479044 carry the German country code but were built with option code 34 ‘Version for Italy’ and VIN 479050 and VIN 479079 carry the German country code but were built with option code 119 ‘Version for Spain’.

# 8 VIN 479079 and 479080 were ordered by the same buyer in Italy for race use with options copying the M003 ‘Clubsport’. They were two of three cars built with this configuration. 479080 was destroyed.

# 9 VIN 479083 carries the UK country code but was delivered to Australia.

# 10 In the mid 1990’s, up until the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the Sultan of Brunei and his brother Prince Jefri and family amassed the largest auto collection in the world. The following three Turbo S VIN’s were purchased by and are in or were in the collection: 479069, 479070, 479077.
